AI-simulated avatars have replaced real actors. Although these characters can still be recognizably AI-generated, there has not been a significant decline in the viewing experience. In fact, for specific genres such as fantasy and werewolf stories, AI can offer a distinct creative advantage.

But the question remains: will picky audiences actually buy it?

Beyond American-style short dramas, localized works tailored for markets such as Japan were also released, including The Billionaire's Divorced Granddaughter. This period saw simultaneous improvements in overall production quality and the localized operating capabilities of overseas short drama content.

The Third Wave (2025–Present): AI Explosion and Total Industry Restructuring
Moving into 2025, the internationalization of short dramas was no longer limited to Chinese companies. In addition to the previously mentioned My Drama with its Ukrainian background, India's KukuTV and South Korea's VIGLOO broke through among a market previously dominated by Chinese platforms.
At the same time, AI "Manhua-Dramas" — comic-style dramas generated or enhanced with AI — expanded from the Chinese market into global markets.
Initially, these productions were relatively rudimentary, consisting mainly of basic AI-stylized filters and motion comics. However, as AI technology iterated rapidly, increasingly sophisticated 2D and 3D AI Manhua-Dramas quickly entered the global market. The combination of established sweet-romance themes and rapidly improving production technology helped solidify the AI Manhua-Drama trend.
In February 2026, with the release of ByteDance's Seedance 2.0, competition within the AI-generated content industry intensified. As AI short dramas began reaching broader audiences, the global short drama market entered what may prove to be a major turning point.

AI Live-Action Dramas Break Into the Q1 2026 Advertising Rankings
Based on data from SocialPeta's Short Drama Charts, we compiled the Q1 2026 AI Short Drama Ad Placement Top 20. AI live-action dramas secured seven positions in the ranking: No. 1, No. 4, No. 7, No. 11, No. 14, No. 15, and No. 16.

The chart-topper, TOO LATE! THE DAUGHTER OF OLYMPUS FORSAKES YOU, was a new release from March. In addition to becoming the Q1 ad placement leader, it appeared in the Daily Top 10 fourteen times and in the Weekly Top 10 twice, demonstrating the platform's high expectations and strong promotional support for the title.

From a plot perspective, the series is essentially a European mythological adaptation of the domestic "rebirth" or reincarnation genre. The narrative stays tightly focused on the heroine's awakening after her rebirth. Rather than relying on a conventional damsel-in-distress or "White Lotus" trope, the story moves toward revenge against her ex-husband and his mistress.
Judging from the feedback shown by global audiences, there has been no significant pushback against the AI-generated characters. Instead, many viewers focused on the male lead's appearance and personality. Some commenters said they paid for access and then returned to watch the series repeatedly.

It is also worth noting that the series had already surpassed 140,000 views on ShortMax's official YouTube channel at the time of the original analysis, making it one of the stronger-performing titles among the platform's recent releases.

NetShort's AI live-action drama ONE MOVE GOD MODE also sparked significant global viewing activity, with some videos surpassing one million views.

The performance of these titles suggests that whether the cast is real or AI-generated may not be the decisive issue. If the plot is compelling and the characters appeal to the target audience, international viewers can still be willing to watch.
From "Human-Led Content" to "Content-Generated AI": The Underlying Logic of Short Dramas Is Being Rewritten
Looking back across these waves of growth, a more fundamental change is unfolding.
During the first and second generations of global short drama development, the core model remained "people performing content." Whether the industry was working through early, unrefined productions or later shifting toward premium, industrialized standards, the basic objective was still to optimize content supply through better actors, more mature filming systems, and more efficient production workflows.
In the AI era, that logic is beginning to reverse. Content no longer has to rely entirely on human production — it can increasingly be generated.
